This publication aims to provide a selective listing of scholarly publications in Western languages. It covers the fields of humanities and social sciences and is arranged by both geographic area and subject. It includes periodical articles, monographs, articles within festschriften, symposia and conference proceedings.

Cumulative bibliography of Asian studies. 1941 - 1970.
Boston : Association for Asian Studies, 1969.
An essential tool for keeping in touch with academic research on Asia. It also provides an excellent means of identifying material published in the 1940 -1970 time period. This index is not included in the online Bibliography of Asian Studies listed above.

British Broadcasting Corporation. Monitoring service. Summary of world broadcasts.

Daily and weekly.
Invaluable resource for the researcher. The BBC set up its Monitoring Service in 1939 to provide information from open-band foreign broadcasts. The summaries, produced daily and weekly, cover a selection of Asian home and foreign radio stations' broadcasts. Extracts from press articles were included, as well as official war communiques, speeches, propaganda trends, transcripts. Arrangements of the summaries and broadcasts differed over the years. Asian material can be found under section headings East (Far East), and for later years, Far East. Larger Australian libraries hold sets of the Summary of World Broadcasts. on microfiche and microfilm or paper.

A similar service to the BBC World Summary Broadcasts. (see above), is also provided by the United States. Each day's broadcasts of news are indexed by country originating the broadcast but not by the subject of the broadcast. At the end of 1996 FBIS will no longer be published in hard copy.

Sources are widely available. While most of this information can now be supplied by a search on APAIS on CD-ROM, this handy guide is still of use to students and researchers for coverage of the 1980's. Two earlier guides in this series complement this publication, A guide to sources on Australia-Asia relations, 1976-1979. by Angela Ham, and, A guide to sources on Australia-Asia relations, 1976-1985. by Anne Platt.

This excellent guide offers an introduction to the languages and literary genres of Southeast Asia. Arrangement is by country. The introduction to each section gives an overview of the literature of the country, the history of its literature, the languages and scripts, the development of the press. References are included and a bibliography is provided at the end of each country section. Librarians will find this a very useful reference guide.

An index to U.N. publications by subject, name and title. Many of the publications are primary documents useful for the study of Asia.
